What is the ground like around Oak Grove?

The town sits on Macon Ridge loess, a cap of windblown silt over an old terrace. The ridge is a low rise east of the Boeuf River. The soil map at the middle of town reads Grenada and Calhoun silt loams. Grenada is moderately well drained, Calhoun is poorly drained, and the two sit side by side in one map unit.

Silt loam digs and moves easy when it is dry, and there is a catch under it. Grenada carries a fragipan, a dense layer a foot and a half to two and a half feet down. Water perches on that pan and sits. A site can look dry on top and stay wet underneath.

Where the ridge runs out, the heavy Delta clay takes over. That is the sticky buckshot that holds water and will not take traffic wet. Neither one makes good pad material on its own, so select fill gets hauled in. We strip the topsoil, place the fill in lifts and slope the pad so water sheds off.

Dirt work on West Carroll Parish farm ground

West Carroll Parish is farm country. The last agriculture census counted 517 farms and about 126,785 acres in farms. Cropland makes up 73,314 of those acres, and woodland another 32,574. Soybeans and corn take the most acres, with cotton and hay behind them.

Farm ground brings its own dirt work. A shop or an equipment shed needs a pad under it. A drive from the blacktop back to the barn wants rock and a crown so water runs off. A turnrow that stayed wet all winter needs building back up.

A farm pond lives or dies on the dirt under it. The LSU AgCenter says the soil needs about 25 percent clay or silt to seal. That gets checked to at least two feet below the planned bottom. Ridge silt loam can run light on clay, so we look at the dirt before a basin is dug.

Clearing fence rows and taking down old buildings

Land clearing out here is fence rows, ditch banks and ground that has grown up. The excavator pushes and pulls the trees and brush. Stumps and root balls come out of the ground whole, and the hole gets backfilled. The skid steer smooths the ground behind it.

The debris goes two ways. It loads into our dump truck and leaves the property, or it gets stacked where you want it. Burning is the landowner's call under the state rule, and parish burn bans change through the year.

Oak Grove is an old town, and its buildings show it. The 2020 count put the town at 1,441 people, down from 1,727 ten years earlier. The median house here dates to about 1973. Louisiana's CDBG Clearance Program pays to clear blighted structures, and the town and the parish are both eligible.

Demolition here is the excavator and the grapple. The debris loads into our truck, and the lot is graded after. Slabs, old foundations and driveways break out the same way. Louisiana 811 gets the call before a teardown, because the law puts that on the demolisher.

Storm cleanup after wind, water and ice

West Carroll Parish takes all three kinds of storm. An EF0 tornado touched down at the Oak Grove Roberts Airport in April 2021, and another in January 2023. An EF1 hit Fiske in January 2025. Trees and power lines went down across the parish in Hurricane Laura, then again in Delta.

March 2016 was the water. Flash floods were logged at Oak Grove on four days that month, with a flood right behind them. Sleet piled about four inches deep here in February 2021. Up to an inch of freezing rain fell at Poverty Point in January 2026.

Storm cleanup is the grapple and the truck. We pick up what is already on the ground, tear out damaged sheds and barns, and haul the pile off. Standing or hanging trees near a house go to a licensed arborist, and the utility handles anything on the lines. We bring the machines over from Bastrop and work the lot back out.
